Whether it carries the history of men and their struggles, our utopias or our dreams, documentary cinema invites us to meet the world and meet others. We sometimes tend to believe that this form of filmmaking, because it seeks the truth, because it testifies, because it is created with reality, is manufactured without artifice, without mise-en-scene, without screenwriting… It’s also ignoring that documentary cinema is above all cinema.

This workshop is aimed at journalists wishing to develop their skills in the field. The world of short films is too vast to be able to gain an oversight on the basis of a few titles. How do you fulfill your dreams when you’re 20 years old and living in a small isolated village in the Senegalese Sahel? While searching for friendship, love and ways to make contacts overseas, day by day Ibrahima, Djiby and Abou are building a double life for themselves on Facebook. Sending messages in a bottle, writing their diaries? Their posts and research on social media are their only link with the outside world – our world from which they know they are excluded.
After studying philosophy and literature, then cinema at I.D.H.E.C, Chantal Richard dedicated herself to the making of her films. Whether fictional or documentaries, those have often taken her to Africa. She also animates film workshops, among others at FEMIS, ENS Lyon, CREADOC Angoulême, the University of France Télévisions, the MRSH of the University of Caen, the Association Porteurs d’Images in Mauritius, Varan Workshops…
